Karmic Life Lessons

A priest, an ophthalmologist, and an engineer were golfing one morning behind a particularly slow group of golfers.

The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys?
We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!"

The doctor chimed in,
"I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!"

The priest said,
"Here comes the greens keeper. Let's have a word with him."

He said, "Hello, George. What's wrong with that group ahead of us?
They're rather slow, aren't they?"

The greens keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind firemen.
They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year,
so we let them play for free anytime."

The group fell silent for a moment. Then the priest said,
"That's so sad. I think I'll say a special prayer for them."

The ophthalmologist added, "Good idea. And maybe I could examine
them to see if there's anything I can do for them."

They were silent for a moment.

Then the engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"

I feel this is meaningful to share...
This poem was found in a MCYS booklet when I was searching about elder abuse and neglect for a project.
Link to booklet: http://www.mcys.gov.sg/MCDSFiles/Resource%5CMaterials%5CElderAbuseBooklet.pdf

What do you see, nurses, what do you see?
Are you thinking when you are looking at me ——
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
Uncertain of habit, with far-away eyes,
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice, “I do wish you’d try.”
Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.
Who unresisting or not, lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.
Is that what you are thinking; is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse, YOU’RE NOT LOOKING AT ME!
I’ll tell you who I am, as I sit here so still,
As I live at your bidding, as I eat at your will,
I’m a small child of ten with a father and mother;
Brother and sisters, who love one another;
A young girl of sixteen with wings on her feet,
Dreaming that soon now a lover she’ll meet;
A bride soon at twenty – my heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows that I promise to keep;
At twenty-five now I have young of my own;
Who need me to build a secure, happy home.
A woman at thirty, my young now grow fast;
Bound to each other with ties that should last.
At forty, my young sons have grown and have gone,
But my man’s beside me to see I don’t mourn.
At fifty once more babies play ’round my knee,
Again we know children, my loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead,
I look at the future, I shudder with dread,
For my young are still rearing young of their own,
And I think of the years and the love that I’ve known.
I’m an old woman now and nature is cruel –
‘Tis her jest to make old age look like a fool.
The body it crumbles, grace and vigor depart,
There is now a stone where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells.
And now and again my battered heart swells,
I remember the joys, I remember the pain,
And I’m loving and living life over again.
I think of the years all too few — gone too fast;
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, nurses, open and see,
Not a crabby old woman — look closer — SEE ME.

This poem is written by an unknown elderly woman
before she died in a geriatric hospital in Scotland.
A nurse found the poem while going through her
possessions after her death. But they did not bother
to remember her name.

"Yes, it’s true. Tiw’s remarkable myth involves women with beards (more on that in a bit.) Regardless, the past 1,000 years or so have not been kind to this Northern European divinity.

To make a long story short, it seems that Tiw used to be a big shot, up there with Odin and Thor in Norse mythology. He may even have been chief of the gods. But culture can be fickle and cruel. Think Miley Cyrus replacing Hillary Duff. Nowadays it’s not clear who he was exactly, or how to pronounce his name. We just have hints.

There’s a lot to like about Tiw: He’s a war god, associated with courage and combat. He may have had a female companion named Zisa. And listen to how he lost his hand:

There was a huge wolf named Fenris who was prophesized to eventually kill Odin, king of the gods. Understandably, the gods decided to restrain the beast while he was still growing. Fenris kept breaking his tethers, so the gods asked the dwarves to use their magic to craft a super leash called Gleipnir.

This is the best part (the women’s beards):

“It was made of six things: the noise a cat makes in foot-fall, the beard of a woman, the roots of a rock, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish, and the spittle of a bird. And though thou understand not these matters already, yet now thou mayest speedily find certain proof herein, that no lie is told thee: thou must have seen that a woman has no beard, and no sound comes from the leap of a cat, and there are no roots under a rock.”

(From the Prose Edda.)

Fenris wouldn’t let the Gods bind him with Gleipnir unless one of them stuck his or her hand in the wolf’s mouth. Only Tiw was brave enough to do it. Snap! That’s how Tiw lost his hand.

But at least the poor guy still has the day between Monday and Wednesday."

superb dinner with marc and weelin. authentic Jap food in an ulu shopping mall on orchard road. this secret Jap place is surprisingly crowded.

i ordered a bowl of ramen (right) cooked with leek and some spicy chili, $13. soup is damn hot and spicy (i like!) and have the nice, tasty after-taste of leek. seems to me like a healthy dish.

weelin order half a plate of fried rice (left), $5, and a plate of funky potatoes, $6. the funky potatoes (above) has pork in it and they are fried with tomato-based sauce. both the pork and potatoes are not too soggy even though there's much sauce on them. should eat this while still hot to get the best taste.

Marcus ordered the daily-dinner-set (left), $16, which seems so worth it. it can be shared by two! the dinner set is different every night! (so exciting) and the shop is famous for fried gyoza.

passers-by could sms well-wishes and get their messages lighted up on orchard road! i think its quite cool.

we were at orchard road 2 days before Christmas and the streets are flooded with people. so difficult to take a photo with only us in it. we got tired of taking photos the same as others and with strangers in our photos so we took photos of the behind of some of the decorations along orchard road. the people who took the photos for us looked puzzled bcuz they don't know what we were shooting with. LOL. it was quite funny and fun.

Hello stranger is a good show to catch if you don't know what to watch! Don't watch Narnia unless you are with kids...

Hello stranger is in Thai (with English subtitiles of course) but filmed in Korea. They did crazy things like eating an octopus live! and stripping down to underwear when its snowing! (it is not r(a)...) A funny story of 2 strangers who met abroad, each with his/her secret. You would think they end up as a couple? hmmm... not really. it was kind of sad in the end. A tough choice for them to end their trip to Korea like that.

I went to catch this movie with marcus and xinni at GV plaza sing! we walked and walked the whole of orchard before the catching the show at 920pm, finding no meaning, till we were bored. We even went to the arcade and see the people who were (or looked) addicted to a fishing game. they had containers of coins with them!!

Narnia was boring! It was nothing like the first Narnia and my expectations were way too high for it. not exciting and i thought some parts were lame. the only part i think was nice was about the dragon. how he helped others and fight to protect them. the most meaningful character is Reepicheep, the large talking mouse, who is so wise and caring in the movie. overall it is a movie more suitable for kids.

"he demanded a divorce because his mistress did not want us to be husband and wife any more."

this is one of the dumbest, ridiculous thing i have heard. how can anyone be controlled totally by others. what is wrong with them?

it wasn't so much of the loyalty that i first thought of. it was why humans can be this vulnerable. we can be controlled by another being, in this case by lust, or by guilt, hatred, money, peer pressure, fame, and whatever you can think of.

I am really curious what goes up people's mind. Is the "slutty third party" so evil to plot this scheme and to suck away all the money that the "pervert uncle" has and to dump him after that? Did the "uncle" find his true love even though he has kids at home to love and an "aunty" at home, who is like a maid? Did the the marriage not work out because they did not love and care for each other anymore? Did they get married because they were match-made? Was it the "old-hag aunty's" fault that her husband left her and their kids? That she was being too naggy, lost her charm and attractiveness, nothing but a burden? Were the kids too mischievous, like "untamed animals", always giving troubles that causes the family to break?

who's fault is it?

May be i'm bias when i asked those questions but it may happen both ways. Having affairs i mean. I am bias because I got bias news/stories. There is a higher percentage of males who get into affairs!

Is this what modernization has brought us to? no commitments or temporary love, and fun... cuz we only live once. I am not saying this don't happen in the olden days but now that I'm living in this era, in a developed country and seeing so many cases of infidelity, it bothers me, a girl that sees positive in everything, that this is society.

What if this is happening to my friends? my relatives? my brother or sister? or even myself?

Is there no ending to this... is there no cure?

don't tell me about any religion, it is another story.......... cuz keeping a faith doesn't keep affairs at bay. It ultimately boils down to what sort of values you have and what kind of person you want to be.

Foods That Extend Time

Eating foods that are good for you can make you feel better not only right now, but in the future as well. Here are three tasty foods to keep you happy and healthy for years to come!

1. Tomatoes

Lycopene is an antioxidant in tomatoes that helps your eyesight and, if you're a man or love someone who is, may help reduce risk of prostate cancer. Tomatoes are also rich in vitamins C, A and K, as well as potassium and fiber.

Benefits: Tomatoes can help keep your teeth, bones, skin and hair healthy, plus lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

2. White Tea

Though not as well known as its green counterpart, white tea actually has more antioxidants than green tea.

Benefits: White tea can help reduce risk of some cancers, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and help promote healthy teeth, skin and gums.

3. Salmon

Salmon is filled with antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as protein, which helps keep you full.

Benefits: Salmon can help prevent blood clots, slow age-related cognitive decline and reduce inflammation.

4. Apples

Loaded with flavanols, apples are a great source of antioxidants and nutrients. Besides keeping your skin from wrinkling and promoting hair growth, apples contain antioxidants that protect against cardiovascular disease and cancer development. Sprinkling some cinnamon on an apple or pairing it with cheese or peanut butter makes for a tasty and nutritious snack.

Benefits: Helps with bone protection and relieves asthma, helps prevent Alzheimer's disease and lowers cholesterol. Prevents certain types of cancers and diabetes, and aids in weight-loss management.

5. Berries

From blue to black to acai, berries are great superfoods that are super for healthy aging. Loaded with antioxidants, berries are naturally sweet, providing for a delicious snack, topping or dessert. One cup of strawberries contains over 100 milligrams of vitamin C—almost as much as a cup of orange juice. High in nutrients and low in calories, the beautifully colored fruits are loaded with flavanols that help prevent disease.

Benefits: Help prevent heart disease and cancer, control blood glucose, slow aging, sharpen brain function and improve vision.

6. Spices

Spices like cinnamon have a hefty amount of health benefits for such a tiny grain. Cinnamon alone can decrease blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol, as well as improve your bowel movements due to its fiber content. Tumeric helps arthritis sufferers, and paprika and cayenne pepper can help fight high blood pressure and improve circulation. The list goes on. In addition to short term and long term health benefits, adding spices adds flavor, which keeps you fuller longer. So shake, shake, shake some spices onto your next meal.

Benefits: Cinnamon— can lowers blood sugar, cholesterol. Turmeric, rosemary, paprika— can slow cancer growth. Ginger— Can decrease motion sickness and nausea, may relieve arthritis pain.

We sat beside the windows.. Can see the bar counter from here.

We can also view part of the F1 track from here. JK wonders are these restaurant along the tracks packed during F1. Cheaper seats..
appetiser, Sisig
this dish is quite special, like tepanyaki..
a bit dry, should eat while its hot and sizzling..

Kaldereta, beef stew in tomato sauce
this is good as meat was tender

Pinakbet, mixed veg in shrimp paste
normal....
v similar to chinese way of cooking, just that the sauce they use is not as salty.

Garlic rice
if u like garlic, this rice is nice. flavourful..

a complimentary dessert! unexpected..
this is egg custard with brown sugar. taste good on the first mouth, and v smooth.

taste like "kueh balu".

but subsequently i felt it was too egg-y.

we had a walk along the river after dinner...
(p.s. i like this photo because my legs looked slim!)

Helium balloon. The balloon was attached to a weight. The address was written on the balloon with magic marker; no postage was affixed. Our operative argued strongly that he should be charged a negative postage and refunded the postal fees, because the transport airplane would actually be lighter as a result of our postal item. This line of reasoning merely received a laugh from the clerk. The balloon was refused; reasons given: transportation of helium, not wrapped.

interesting idea to send a balloon! haha.. other interesting objects that were delivered or tried to deliver can be seen in this research.

In: Purple

Purple is the color of the season. Backstage during New York Fashion Week (for fall), I spotted everything from light lavenders to deep plums on eyes, cheeks, lips and nails. I suggest playing up this trend by focusing on one feature at a time and choosing the best violet hue for your complexion.

1. Barbecue sauce or ketchup?
Healthiest pick: Ketchup. Not only does it have fewer calories and sodium than the barbecue sauce, but it also contains lycopene, which helps reduce cancer risk.

2. Hot dog or hamburger?
Healthiest pick: Hamburger. Even though it has more meat than the hot dog, the hamburger has fewer calories, fat and sodium. Just make sure the burger's no more than four ounces, and skip the cheese and bun if you want to save even more calories.

3. Peanuts or chips?
Healthiest pick: Peanuts. They have fiber, protein and healthy fat, and are much more filling than potato chips, so you'll stop before you eat too many.

Do you ever think that if you could only get a little more sleep, you'd feel a whole lot better—and thinner? You may be on to something!

Research conducted by Columbia University Medical Center epidemiologist James Gangwisch, Ph.D., shows that people who sleep for five or fewer hours a night have a 60 percent higher risk of obesity than those who sleep for seven hours. The people who slept less also had a greater risk of developing diabetes and hypertension.

Why could this be? Turns out sleep helps to regulate ghrelin, a hormone that signals hunger, as well as leptin, a hormone that tells us when we're full. Not enough sleep gives us too much ghrelin and not enough leptin—potentially causing us to give in to our cravings and eat more. Preventing weight gain may be the best reason of all to try to get more shut-eye!

老爸!祝你生日快乐,身体健康,心想事成!我很像你,也很想家。

Today i went for a run at 615am, called home while running to wish my dad a happy birthday.
Feels good. Both the run and the call.
The mist was heavy in the morning, but it is going to be a sunny and warm day today and for the next few days too, with temperature hitting 20degrees.
I also send out details on the day camps that we are organising for an orphanage. Proposal is done and we are left with the translation to Mandarin. I also registered with a few volunteering events, like pruning and picnic with kids, with a few friends.
<morning>

I am still humming the songs we sang yesterday at PartyWorld. (:
It is ironic that I actually like my life here. Shanghai exceeds my expectation of China. I thought I would be suffering but no, I am enjoying myself here although I miss home and Singapore! =S
<afternoon>

Came home had fried rice, cooked by jiankai and sam, for dinner after yoga lesson with weelin and huilin in a shop within this estate. I'm so tired now that I can go lala land immediately.
<night>
